Hedge Fund Poker Tournament
A new study, Hedge Fund Hold’em, has found hedge fund managers who do well in poker tournaments enjoy significantly better fund returns. We find that hedge fund managers who do well in poker tournaments have significantly better fund performance. This effect is stronger for tournaments with more entrants, larger buy-ins, larger cash prizes and for managers who placed in higher positions or who win in multiple tournaments, suggesting poker skills are correlated with fund management skills. Hundreds of hedge fund professionals filled Gotham Hall in Midtown Manhattan last night for the 4th annual “Take ‘Em To School” charity poker tournament. William O. Perkins III (born February 2, 1969) is an American hedge fund manager, film producer and high stakes poker player from Houston, Texas.[1][2] Perkins focuses on venture capital and energy markets. He founded Small Ventures USA, L.P in 1997 and later joined Centaurus Energy in 2002. He currently manages Houston-based energy hedge fund, Skylar Capital.[3]
Perkins grew up in Jersey City, New Jersey the son of football player and politician Bill Perkins and graduated from St. Peter's Preparatory School in 1986. In 2016, he contributed $1.5 million towards the construction of the William O. Perkins III '86 Athletic Center at his alma mater.[4]

Perkins graduated as Electrical and Electronics Engineer from the University of Iowa and worked under natural gas trader, John D. Arnold for several years before starting his own hedge fund. During his 12-year career, Perkins directed NorthernStar Natural Gas and was the CEO of Cutuco Energy Central America. Perkins actively traded the stock market turning a $1.25 million profit trading Goldman Sachs in September 2008.[5] In 2009 Perkins became involved in film production, producing various films including After.Life (2009), Unthinkable (2010), and Cat Run (2011).[6]

Perkins is a poker player and has entered multiple events including the World Series of PokerBig One for One Drop, PokerStars Big Game, PokerStars Caribbean Adventure and 'High stakes poker' as well as Poker Night On Wall Street.[3][7][8] Perkins is friends with Dan Bilzerian and they are often seen together.[9]
As of 2019, his total live tournament winnings exceed $5,400,000 of which $1,965,163 have come from his One Drop cash at the WSOP.[10]

Poker legend Vanessa Selbst announced just a couple of weeks ago that she was stepping away from poker to pursue a gig at a hedge fund. She didn’t reveal the name of the hedge fund at the time of her surprise retirement announcement.
Per a report from Bloomberg, Selbst joined Bridgewater Associates, the world’s largest hedge fund. The media outlet cited an unnamed source. According to Forbes, Bridgewater manages a whopping $160 billion.

Selbst, 33, ended her professional poker-playing career with nearly $12 million in lifetime tournament earnings, including three World Series of Poker bracelets. She’s the top female tournament earner of all-time.
Selbst described her role at Bridgewater as being involved with “trading research and strategy.” She called her new job “exhausting, exciting, and completely humbling.”
She admitted that she doesn’t know if working at a hedge fund will ultimately work out. The poker great also didn’t say how much she will be making away from the tables. As part of her career change, Selbst ended her sponsorship with PokerStars, the world’s largest poker site.
